We are Home

Bethany, Caleb and I arrived home to a warm welcome Wednesday night at 9pm. We were so happy to be home. The trip went pretty well, but was extremely long (over 30 hours start to finish). Caleb actually had a fever when I woke him up the morning we departed China. I ended up taking him to the doctor this morning (Friday) and he is now on antibiotics. He probably has a sinus infection as well as a small skin infection on his finger. Our first day home we were running on adrenaline and so excited that we did fine, but today we had to crash for a nap this afternoon and are still dragging a bit. But, Caleb seems to be very happy and enjoying getting to know his growing family. He is shy when meeting new people but often warms up after a short time.
I just wanted to thank my parents for staying with our other sons while we were away and for taking such good care of them and the house. I didn't worry about them at all and they sure enjoyed the gourmet food and extra grandparent attention and time. It was a huge blessing.

Lunch with new friends

We met up for lunch today with another family adopting that we had met on the internet and an American woman who lives in China. It was some great fellowship and time of sharing together. Caleb is doing well, but not eating as well as I would like to see him. I figure when we get him home, it will be easier to introduce new foods and control his diet a bit better. He certainly can eat carbs like rice, cheerios and bread, but we need a bit more variety. Bethany has been working very hard to finish up school assignments before we return home. Our consulate appt. was this morning and our guide called us to say all went well this morning. Tomorrow afternoon we will go and take an oath and receive Caleb's visa. So, it will be very soon now that we will be boarding an airplane and coming home. Please pray for a safe trip and that Caleb will handle the trip well. It will not be easy, so I think I will try to rest up before hand. See you all soon. Thanks for your comments and prayers. Love,
Mary Ann

Sunday in China

We heard from George this morning, Saturday night your time, and he was safe and at home. We went to a worship service in Chinese/English this morning and just stayed for the singing. We met some Christian young Chinese women and one in particular touched our hearts. She told of becoming a believer and having her family not allow her new friends, going to church, or reading her bible. But, she has finally won their acceptance of her new faith, although, they still remain Bhuddist. She is trying to get a visa to study in American and live with a Christian family she met at the church. Please pray for her, her English name is Vanessa. We ran into her again when heading to our hotel and we gave her a hug and told her we would be praying for her. Very sweet. It was great to sing praises to God in China, some songs in chinese and others in English. Caleb was actually very quiet and seemed to enjoy it. We cannot wait to get him home to meet all of you. Bethany, Caleb and I are still enjoying shopping and eating more delicious Chinese food. Last night we went to a new restaurant near our hotel and we ate three large dishes, including a large fish for just $8.50. Amazing. I think we will go there again. We also got Caleb in the pool again today before his nap and he loved it. Bethany goes in with him and he just loves the water even though it is very cold. Well, I better go. Just wanted to check in with you all. I have no computer, so no photos (except for one George added from a few days ago). Sorry. Love you! Mary Ann

Day at the Zoo

Today we took Caleb to the Guangzhou Zoo. It was a very nice zoo with all the typical animals, like monkeys, lions, tigers, bear, giraffes, elephants, etc. Caleb really enjoyed the animals and the gardens were beautiful also. We took a taxi both ways and made our way back to the hotel with no problems. Caleb was exhausted by the time we got in the taxi and promptly fell asleep in Bethany’s lap. We were all extremely hot and sweaty and anxious to get back to the hotel and try out the rooftop swimming pool. But, Bethany was quite alarmed when she got out of the taxi and discovered Caleb had done a little more than sweated on her. He also wet his pants. We were quite a sight walking/running to the hotel trying to hide Bethany’s very wet pants. We did get to try out the pool and even though Caleb has been terrified of the baths, and even though the water was very cold, he got in and played with the girls, even sticking his face in the water repeatedly trying to blow bubbles. He squealed with delight while splashing and playing. We think he will be a swimmer by next summer!
We enjoyed a final dinner together tonight and have been packing tonight. George and Noel leave tomorrow morning for Hong Kong over night and then head back to the USA. It is hard to see them go, but we are sure our last days here will also fly by and all of us will be together in Del Rio again. I will not have a computer but will try to get onto the business center computer or a local internet café nearby to post. Bethany, Caleb and I will depart Guangzhou on 15 November.

Exam Day

Well, Caleb has been challenging his Mommy a bit more today. He suddenly wants to be very contrary, refusing the bib at breakfast, dropping to the ground like Bethany used to do when he doesn’t get his way. Noel told him at breakfast, “Don’t bother trying, Caleb, Mom has experience--me.” But one moment he is acting like a terrible two-year old, and the next moment he is charming us and making incredibly cute faces that are irresistible. Obviously, he is still emotionally fragile. So, we are really enjoying loving him and giving him as much security as possible. We have finished most of the adoption activities, but our guide will be running paperwork around to get the rest of it completed. We plan to go to the zoo tomorrow, and then Noel and George will leave Friday morning for Hong Kong for the night and then fly home to the US on Saturday. Bethany and I will do a bit more shopping but mostly just enjoy some rest and quiet days along with a bit more great Chinese food.

This morning, Caleb had his medical exam. He handled it really well. Throughout the day, he seemed to do much better. He really is attaching very well to his sisters; in other words, he's becoming more secure with his new family...at least as much as a two-year old can at this stage. We took him on several more walks today. The picture above is inside one of the hotels near where he had his exam.

Orphanage Visit

Today we traveled about two hours (one way) to visit the orphanage where Caleb has been living since he was found at two months old. We were blessed with a tour of the facility and also a wonderful meeting with the foster mother that has been caring for Caleb along with four other boys for about five months. We were not even certain he was in foster care until this visit today. It was obvious that she is a very loving and nurturing person and loved Caleb very much. She cried when we arrived and when we left. She thinks Caleb is very smart, which we of course agree with. Smile. Until we met her, he would not go to the other care givers in the orphanage. He only wanted Mom or Dad, which was very nice for us. A non profit organization named Half the Sky has been involved in this orphanage trying to make things a bit better for the kids. Caleb was enrolled in a daily “school” where he had art time and play time and planned activities with other children since he turned two. The teachers have been hired by this organization. They have also moved children out of the orphanage and into an apartment building adjacent where couples are paid to be foster parents to a group of four to six kids. Caleb was also enrolled in this program for the past five months. I believe these two programs have made his transition much easier and helped him to be emotionally healthy. But, the most difficult part of the day was seeing the baby rooms and the handicapped children room with rows and rows of cribs set up with many babies and children just waiting for their chance to have a family of their own. Most of them will never have a family. One of the adoptive fathers we have met here told me tonight that there are 800,000 children in orphanages in China and about 10,000 are adopted each year.
Caleb slept in the van all the way home. But, he has been much more fussy and challenging tonight. We are not sure if he is just exercising his will a bit more or feeling less secure after the visit to the orphanage. I think it is likely a combination of the two. We did have dinner at a wonderful Thai restaurant tonight. Tomorrow we have the medical exam for the American visa. We miss you all.

Passport Day

Today was a slow day and we spent the morning and early afternoon in our hotel. Caleb slept in until 9am and then took a two hour nap after lunch, too. He is a good sleeper. We received the adoption certificate today and applied for his passport. After a bit more shopping we went to a fabulous restaurant and for $20 we had five dishes and couldn’t begin to finish all the food. The shrimp were served with shells and heads on, but were the freshest and most delicious I have ever eaten. The chicken was served in a large pot, a whole chicken with feet, heads, and all included. But, the flavor was great. We had several vegetable dishes that were unlike anything I have ever eaten and even Noel was gobbling up the vegetables. Really, Grandma Gossman! The jelly fish skin was the only thing she picked out of the stir fried vegetables. Caleb was enthralled with the fish tanks near our table. He is learning so many words every day and fish is one of them. Caleb liked the ice cream a bit more tonight and soon will need his very own ice cream cone. Tomorrow we travel to visit Caleb’s orphanage and will see some countryside along the way. Just twenty years ago, ShenZhen City was a small village and today it is a huge city. It is a very large industrial city with many factories and companies located there.
Have a great day.

Hello! Well, Caleb is getting cuter and cuter everyday. He was saying all kinds of words today for me when we were in the taxi like car, truck, taxi, and van. It was adorable. We went shopping also and I got some stuff. Caleb tried to eat the rest of Noel’s cone but she pulled it out of his mouth. He smiles more and more everyday. You should see him and dad playing games. It is hilarious. I miss y’all a lot! Bye!

Adventures in China

Today we walked over to the island where most Americans adopting stay while they are here and were hoping to attend an English worship service. We listened to the end of a Chinese service, but the biggest blessing was meeting several other Christian families that are adopting. We met several other Chinese boys with special needs. All were minor issues and one was another Caleb. One family we sat down and had a nice long visit with while the boys played and shared crayons. Their son was a few months older than Caleb. They were adopting their tenth child, four bio, six adopted. And, they are Grandparents, but looked young, healthy and active. We really enjoyed visiting with them and hearing about their children. In the afternoon we went with our guide to a museum of handcrafted art, such as carved ivory pieces, wooden carvings, sculptures, embroidery work, etc. We also visited a Buddhist temple and learned a little bit about Buddhism. It was interesting but also very sad to see all the things they do to try to bring better luck to their family. If only they understood the hope and assurance they could have in Christ Jesus given freely by a loving and holy God. A few more families arrived here in our hotel last night, so we have had a nice time talking with them and seeing their children also.
We went to the electronics market where you can buy cell phone, games, cameras, MP3 players, DVD’s, etc. We bought a few more DVD’s to add to our collection going home. They cost less than $2 each.
Caleb continues to charm us and amaze us. He laughs and smiles a ton and is a very active toddler. He is definitely bonding well with both Mom and Dad, and we are so thankful for this. It is hard to believe he has not always been with us. He still cries when I give him his cold medicine or brush his teeth. And, he won’t sit down for his bath, but did seem to enjoy it a bit more today. Did I tell you about his Mohawk hair? He has this cowlick on the top of his head that makes his hair stand straight up just along the middle. I have tried combing it to the side, but it refuses to lie down. Perhaps when his hair gets a bit longer, it will be more cooperative. Potty training was never my favorite time of parenting. But, having a potty training child in China who does not speak English is a bit more challenging. Twice today, I was unable to get him to a bathroom in time and we were thankful for the diaper/pullup he was wearing. Once, we were in the bathroom, but the stalls were all taken. Then there was the time we had made it back to our hotel room, rushing up the elevator and into the bathroom only to have him pee as I was getting the pants down, all over the floor, clothes, etc. We just have to laugh.
The food here has been very good. I happen to love Chinese tea and food. We have been to one certain restaurant near our hotel three times now. We finally figured out what the mystery meat that we ordered the second night was, some animal’s intestine. So, tonight, we were very careful to order specific foods, like Chicken with vegetable, rice noodles with vegetables, etc. Well, the Chicken came beautifully displayed on the plate, literally a half chicken cut straight through the chicken from the top, dividing the left from the right side of the chicken, head and all. It is always fun to see the girls’ reaction. Some of the things we pass while walking down the streets are amazing. Like, the snake wine shop, complete with large glass jars filled with wine and whole snakes in them. Or, the animal hooves being sold along the streets. The spices and dried mushrooms in huge bags are amazing. Caleb enjoys the streets that are lined with pets, including baby chickens, various rodents, turtles, tons of fish, puppies, birds, cats, bunnies, etc. The most amazing thing is the big plastic tubs of scorpions of various sizes. Sometimes you see dead, dried things like snake skins, sea horses, shrimp, but these scorpions are very much alive! It really is amazing!
We have gotten only smiles and positive comments from the Chinese people about our son. They all seem genuinely happy that we are adopting him. We are so thankful for him and pray we can teach him to appreciate the country and culture he began his life in and know and trust the Creator that made him. Thanks for all of your support.
To Peter, Yuri and Josh: We miss you and love you. Congrats Josh on your appointment to the Air Force Academy! We are so proud of all of you. We know you all are having fun with Grandma and Grandpa.

Shopping Day

Today our guide took us out shopping at various markets nearby. We bought DVD’s for under $2 each, pearls, beads, new shoes and underwear for Caleb, ate lunch at Pizza Hut and then shopped some more. We bought a lot of Christmas presents and then ate dinner at McDonald’s. Bob, our guide stayed with us all day. He is a great guy, and we have appreciated his help and friendship. Caleb has definitely decided that Daddy is “the man”. If he can have Daddy, he really doesn’t want the rest of us. They have a lot of fun playing and it is wonderful to watch the connection that they have. Caleb is beginning to talk more and it is really amazing how much he understands all ready. He is starting to repeat some words, and we have no doubt the boy will be talking a blue streak before we know it. We are all a bit exhausted from all the shopping we did today. We hope to attend a Christian church nearby tomorrow, but are not sure what kind of church nor what to expect. We are still in awe and wonder at what an incredible blessing God has given us in our son. It has also been a pleasant surprise to find out he is also so much fun! We found out he was born in the year of the monkey and we believe that. He loves to climb things. Have a great day. Thanks for all your prayers.

Caleb, Our Son

Thank you for all of your prayers and support. Today has been a wonderful day with our new son. He slept through the night last night and I had to wake him up this morning. He ate breakfast well and then we went to meet with the officials in town. Caleb YuDong officially became a Day today. We had two interviews by officials asking us our name, age, about our children and our reason for adopting. Then, towards the end of the interview, they asked us if we were satisfied with our child. Yes, very much we replied. He has really come out of his shell today and has only cried a couple times, once when waking from his nap and when I gave him his cold medicine. Caleb is smart, funny, and has a wonderful personality. We had a fun time playing in the room today and Caleb and Daddy have begun to have a great relationship and they play many games that often result in much laughter and fun.. We took him out for a walk this afternoon and tried to share an ice cream cone with him, and he made the funniest face when we gave it to him. He does not want any ice cream. I guess it is too cold for him. He is certainly experiencing many firsts, and seems to be doing so very well. It took him only about five minutes to fall asleep tonight. We all love him so very much. He has charmed us completely and won our hearts so incredibly fast. We are so very blessed! We cannot wait to introduce him to his brothers and know they will enjoy him just as much.

November 2, 2006 - Gotcha Day!

November 2, 2006

We have arrived in Guangzhou and are waiting to go meet our son this afternoon. We checked into the hotel yesterday afternoon and are feeling quite pampered in this incredible Holiday Inn-Shifu. We have two adjoining rooms that are very spacious and nice. The roof top pool is beautiful and we hope to have a warm day to take Caleb out there to try a dip in the pool. The buffet breakfast this morning had many western and Chinese favorites. We are situated on a famous pedestrian only street with many shops and our teenage daughters about had their eyes popping out of their heads. The prices are amazing and they are anxious to bring home some new clothes, shoes, purses, etc. Realize that we live in a small town in West Texas on the border three hours from San Antonio. We went out last night to have some inexpensive but delicious Chinese food in a restaurant just down the street a bit. We had a sample of duck, fish, pork, and chicken dishes. The vegetables are always amazing and delicious. We all have been enjoying the tea as well. Last night it was the green tea. The entire meal was about $17 for five people. In the evening, there are many people milling about and lights on, booths selling foods, snacks, drinks, very much like a carnival or party atmosphere. This is slightly different from going to our local Super Walmart or our very shopping mall in Del Rio.

Our guide's name is Bob and he is 24 and a really funny guy. We enjoyed meeting him yesterday and we will be glad to have him help us through all the events in the next few days. He will also take us shopping and has all ready told us about all the amazing deals we will be able to find.

This afternoon we will go to the Civil Affairs Office and finally meet Caleb YuDong Day. He has been telling his friends that he is going to meet his Mommy and Daddy and is all excited. Of course, he probably has no idea what it will be like to leave his entire life behind and move to a new land with new kinds of foods, a new language, new smells, etc. We will be able to visit the orphanage next week. We feel so blessed and are so very excited to meet our new son. Please pray for him to feel safe and secure and know our love as quickly as possible.

Note to friends and family: We are unable to check our blogspot (easily) here in China, so if you want to communicate with us, please email us at f16dday@stx.rr.com. We can check our email easily and would love to hear from you.

Update: We have Caleb and he is wonderful! He cried for a while when we received him, but then cuddled with Mommy on the van ride back to the hotel and relaxed. He then played and had fun in the room with his new toys. He enjoyed playing with the girls and Daddy. He also ate a little and drank a bottle. He did not want to have his clothes off and take a bath, but we did accomplish that and got dressed for bed. He has stopped crying now and we are trying to get him back to sleep. He does have a lot of bug bites on him and a bit of a cough. We love him very much and are so thankful for this wonderful blessing.

October 31, 2006 - Touring Beijing

October 31, 2006
Today we enjoyed climbing on the Great Wall and it was very steep, many steps going up. George went the highest and the rest of us went high enough to have an incredible view. We had a crystal clear day with blue skies and beautiful weather. On our way to the wall, we stopped at a jade market and while there I started talking with another American man and come to discover he is the father of one of George’s recently graduated student pilots. He had just been to the graduation in September. What a small world! We also ate a wonderful Chinese lunch and toured a cloisonné factory and did some shopping. In the afternoon we went back into Beijing and had a tour of the ancient Hutong district. We toured via several rickshaws and it was quite exciting riding on the same streets with buses and cars and other bikes, of course. We then were invited into a local home and had tea and toured the very humble and old home that had once been the home to the family of a concubine that eventually became the empress and ruler of China for 48 years. We have learned some fascinating stories in the history of China. We finished off this wonderful day with a Chinese tea, learning about the different teas and how to make them. We all loved the tea and purchased some to bring home. As always we fell into bed that night early again.
